Tapobrata Roy, the architect of
JDRF India, was an epitome of selfless service to the
cause of juvenile diabetics in India. Humanitarianism,
love, service were his ideals.
Late Roy, his beloved juvenile diabetic children all
calling him Kaku (uncle), was born on 9th April 1931
in Kolkata. He attended Tirthapati Institution in
Kolkata, completing his school course in 1948, and
joined graduate course at St. Xaviers College with
Honours in Chemistry. In the same year, 1948, at the
age of 17 he contracted juvenile diabetes. Prevented
by the college authority to pursue the honours course
for his ailment, he graduated in the pass course in
1953. Later, he passed the Postgraduate Diploma
Examination in Medical Laboratory Technology (DLT)
form School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata.
For more than 2 years he worked there as a Biochemical
Chemist under the John Hopkins University Centre for
Medical Research and Training , USA. He served with
several reputed international pharmaceuticals firm and
government- own concerns in different capacities.
Afterwards, he left his job and devoted himself to the
cause of poor diabetic children. In 1973, he attended
the 8th Congress of the International Diabetes
Federation in Brussels. Again, in 1976, he attended
the Federation's 9th Congress in New Delhi. From 1981
he served as the Founder President of the Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation, which is the Indian affiliate of
the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International , New
York. In 1982, he attended the 12th Juvenile Diabetes
International Foundation Congress in Dallas, USA. He
became a member of the International Governing Council
of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, and
was an active member of the Governing Body of Calcutta
Heart Clinic & Hospital, Salt Lake. In recognition of
his noble service as an insulin - dependent diabetic
leading an active life, he received the Joslin
Diabetes Award on 2001.
On 3rd May 2003, at the age of 72, he breathed his
last. Aflame is his spirit in his creation, Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation India.
